Entitlement is the top complaint about intern performance
'Entitlement' is the top complaint about intern performance 'Entitlement' is the top complaint about intern performance If youâre a college student or recent grad, youâre probably interning somewhere if you donât have a full-time job this summer. Thatâs why itâs important to act professionally at work - in fact, recent data from global organizational consulting firm Korn Ferry shows that 37% of working people think âentitlementâ is the top âintern performance dealbreaker.â So, acting out just wonât cut it.The ins and outs of internshipsHere are the worst things you can do during an internship, or âperformance deal breakers.â âShowing up late/leaving early:â 13% âNot understanding the company:â 19% âBad cultural fit:â 31% âEntitlement:â 37% While 48% of those surveyed say that having an internship is âvery importantâ if you want to get a job, 50% say itâs âsomewhat importantâ and 2% said itâs ânot important.âBut the most important thing that people seek out in interns is âpassionâ at 65%. Next up is âperformanceâ at 21%, then the âschool they attendedâ at 7%, then âgradesâ at 4% and âpedigreeâ at 3%.Ally Van Deuren, Korn Ferry University Relations Center of Excellence Lead for North America, commented on the research in a statement showing that your educational background isnât everything: âComing from a highly regarded school or having a strong pedigree will only get intern candidates so far. ⦠What really matters is attitude and their willingness to work, learn and grow.âWhat interns should be striving forHereâs what they should be doing. âBuilding their network on the job:â 5% âBeing indispensable:â 9% âDemonstrating passion:â 19% âLearning:â 67% Hereâs how people find their best interns: âBy them proactively contacting you:â 20% âBy them submitting their resumes online:â 20% âCampus job fairs:â 25% âThrough a connection:â 35% The research also found that 79% surveyed said their companies would be âhighly likelyâ to employ people who did a good job during their internship there and 20% said itâs âsomewhat likely.â Just 1% said it was âunlikely.âBut while 62% of those surveyed said they got a full-time position from an internship, 38% said they had not. But internships arenât the only way to get there: the good news is that 80% agreed that they would employ âa college grad if he or she hadnât had a previous internship,â while just 20% wouldnât.
